Although bonsai Karate is a relatively new club, we teach a traditional Japanese karate that started hundreds of years ago in Okinawa.

The islands of Okinawa – rich in their own martial traditions – became a prefecture of Japan, and as a result a law was passed banning the possessions of all weapons, this was intended to reduce the threat of revolt, The Okinawans, however, turned this to their own advantage by adapting their own indigenous art with those arts taught to them by merchants from mainland China.
The art we know today was taking its first steps.

My Name is Sensei Nick Noordink, I am the senior instructor at Bonsai Karate,

and as such will be one of your instructors.

I can appreciate that you may be a bit nervous to attend your first karate lesson. You may beasking yourself a few questions, Will I be the only beginner?

Will I feel welcomed? Will I feel a little silly not knowing anything yet?

I can assure you will be welcomed by our professional instructors,

and that there will be lots of other beginners there, just like you.

Like a lot things in life, taking that first step will be the hardest,
after that you will feel great for achieving something new and exciting for your life!

Karate is a very worthwhile art form to learn, and will assist you with your day to day life by building up your self-confidence, Giving you Great health through fitness and also by teaching you some potentially life saving skills.

If I haven’t met you already, I look forward to meeting you at your 1st lesson.

Please do not hesitate to ask any questions.

You can contact me at Bonsai karate on 0421 159 041.
Kind Regards

Traditional Karate Etiquette

Bonsai Karate

Karate is a Japanese martial art, and as in Japan , proper etiquette in a dojo is important.
All Karate-ka (students) must execute a standing bow (ritsu-rei) upon entering and leaving the dojo.
A standing bow is also exchanged at the beginning and end of Kata (pattern of basic moves),
kumite (sparring), when working with a partner and also formal practice.
Classes always begin and end with a kneeling bow (za-rei) to the Sensei (teacher).
Students always line up according to rank – highest belts standing to the right side of the lower belts.

The White Karate Uniform karate-ka wear is called a Gi.
The Colour of the Belt worn represents the grade of the student
A beggining Student wears a white belt which is the First Grade (10th kyu)
The colour of the belt gets progresively Darker as the student goes through the Grading process.
A Provisional Black is awarded once students can perform excellent karate ability & attitude
This grade is called Shodan-Ho (provisional Black)
Once in a black belt the grade levels go from 1st Dan - 10th Dan being the highest grade.
When Students Spar (Kumite) They should maintain a good attitude towards their partner.
The instructor will set the pace, this must be taken seriously,
and students should take extra care not to make contact with any partner.

Karate is practiced barefoot in the dojo, all jewelry must be removed before class,
finger nails and toe nails to be kept well manicure and clean in dojo.
Probably the most important aspect is that you maintain respect and loyalty to your instructor,
and show your willingness to co-operate.
Arrive 15 minutes prior to class and stretch your legs and arms a little before hand.
